The Central Queensland Land Council Aboriginal Corporation was established in 1990 to deal with land related issues for the traditional owners of this region. In 1995 it was recognised as a Native Title Representative Body. In 2000 it was re-recognised under the new processes established by ATSIS.
Central Queensland Land Council Aboriginal Corporation's area of responsibility (approximately 190,000 sq kms) includes the area of land and waters as defined by the Townsville ATSIC region.Major towns and cities in the region include Tully, Cardwell and Ingham in the north. Charters Towers, Hughenden and Richmond in the west, with Townsville, Ayr/Home Hill, Bowen, Mackay and Sarina down the Queensland coast. The area also includes the sea area from the east coast to the outer extremities of the Great Barrier Reef, and the Bowen Basin, renowned for its coal deposits and the mining towns of Collinsville, Glenden and Mt Coolon.
Central Queensland Land Council Aboriginal Corporation's region is the subject of intense development. There is a huge growth in mining, tourism and agriculture. There is also the expansion of urban areas within the region with its associated growth in infrastructure and need for land.
Our Vision:
- To ensure the native title rights and interests of traditional owners of our region are recognised, respected and protected.
- Maximise the Native Title rights and interests of the indigenous traditional owners and custodians of this region.
- To best represent the Aboriginal and Torrest Strait Islander people of this region.
- To ensure informed consent of native title holders to decisions regarding the protection of their native title rights and interests through effective consultation.
- To protect and maximise the native title rights and interests of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in this region through the best possible performance of the functions and poweres of a Native Title Representative Body under the Native Title Act 1993.
- To minimise the effect of extinguishment of native title in this region and seek compensation or alternative beneficial outcomes where this may occur or have occurred.
- To develop positive relationships with all stakeholders to land in this region to maximise negotiated outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in this region.
